I had always avoided this section of the forum but to think that I had to come here so soon.... :crying:
Biscuits, one of my 2 robos, male, age 11 months and 27 days old, passed away on the 14th of September, 2003 at 5.15pm... :RIP:
Below is a memoir dedicated to him:
BISCUITS
Biscuits, a male roborovski hamster arrived to live with us along with his cage-mate, Wally in the year 2003, January 17th. He was a hyper active hamster who loved to run on his wheel so hard that the whole cage trembles. His favorite food are yoghurt, peanuts and sunflower seeds, with the first being the most favorite. He did not have a shy bone in him and allowed us to stroke him on the very second day living with us. He was about four months old then. Thus, I counted 17th of January as their date of birth. He should turn one year old on the 17th of September together with Wally. Sadly, he did not make it to his birthday feast.
He ran very fast, is intelligent as he was always the one to climb up onto the hanged chopsticks at the corner of his cage and from there, climb onto the roof of his house. Then he’ll jump down and ran back to his wheel and start running again. He made his first great escape the second day after his fight with Wally which ended them both in the vet’s office for the first time. He also liked to run to the bars and look at us every morning when we switched on the lights. He is also a hamster with manners as he will always take the given treats with his tiny paws gently from you and not snatch it away with force. Such a sweet hamster was he.
Of course, he was not without a temper. He can bite when he was irritated, especially if you were to disturb his sleep. His favorite pastime was to jump up and bite you on the finger. So you got to react faster than him! He also liked to chew enthusiastically on my cotton glove which I had it on sometimes when I played with them. He was a hamster with character.
He also liked to roll in the sand bath but sadly, after developing his illness, he couldn’t do so… He liked his vegetables too but he liked the stem part of his leafy vegetable best, besides cauliflowers and other vegetable.
He developed a lump between his right leg and backside in July, 2003. At first it looked bruised so I took him to the vet then. The vet said it might be a bladder being pushed out by weakening muscle tissues along the leg. She gave me an option: to let Biscuits go through the surgery. But chances are, he might not wake up after the operation. Thus, I did not let him go through it. To this day, I am still wondering if I had done the right thing. The lump started to grow bigger and bigger after one week from visiting the vet. It turned reddish in color and it pained our hearts just to look at him walk. He could no longer walk with ease. The lump touched the floor and made climbing difficult. Thankfully, he was still active and perky.
Things started to go downhill as the weeks went by. He became weaker and weaker, and sometimes looked very tired and listless. His appetite went smaller and smaller and sometimes only wants to eat his favorite treats. His gradually thinning frame made us all sad to look at him. His breathing also became more labored. I tried to make him as comfortable as possible but the little rascal loved to move a lot which made us afraid that he might make his lump burst one day.
Our fear came true one week ago. His lump bled and I tried my best to stop the bleeding and fed him antibiotics daily, besides washing his wound and applying antibiotic powder on it. He seemed better after a few days. I was really not feeling very positive when I saw that he was leaking out pus like liquid last night. This morning, I washed his wound as usual and saw that he looked really tired and almost not moving… Then today while I was out at work, some gray sticky liquid leaked out of his lump. My sister told me when I called home that Biscuits looked to be in some difficulty. I have thought then that his days are nearly over.
When I just alighted from the bus at 11.15pm, my mum told me that Biscuits had passed away that evening, at 5.15pm, 6 hours before, right after I called home. I couldn’t help but started to cry. I was not even with him in his last minute! How I wished I was the one to hold him in his last fight for life… He was weak and breathing difficultly and oozing the gray liquid. Then he shuddered a few times and passed on, his limps falling limply on his side. My sisters took out a round plastic container, layered it with tissues, and laid Biscuits onto it, letting him be in a position as if he were sleeping on his side and covered his with a tissue as a blanket. By the time I saw him; he was already stiff… but looked to be at peace. I laid some of his favorite food in his coffin and sealed it up. Together with my parents, we went to the grass land below our flat to find a spot for Biscuits’ burial. Finally, we found a shady spot underneath a mango tree where the soil is softer. My father dug the hole and I laid Biscuits in his coffin into the hole and then put the soil back on top. We bade him farewell for the last time and went home. Then I had bouts of crying again before I typed this final tribute to Biscuits.
He, the cute little hamster, brought me and my family much joy and laughter during his short life shared with us. It was very bad that he didn’t even get to see his first birthday which is only three days away… Only his friend Wally is left and he doesn’t even realize that his friend had passed away… I hope he will be at peace and take his rest under the tree…
Biscuits, one of my darlings, will always be in my heart and mind…
