I went down to serang nth & drop into Pet kiosk to buy some stuffs...i chance upon a very young baby sick bunny who was diagnosed with diahrrea....i ask the sales staffs abt it & she told me that the owner has bought the bunnies a couple of days ago & have been feeding the young bun something like,a carrot a day which results the current sickness. Just wondering what are the things to watch out for when one buys a young bunny home?what shld be the correct diet ,the right beddings & the best treats to give to them?

everytime i read something bad happened to bunnies, i always get ... firstly, i really wonder if the bunny belongs to someone else, and not pet kiosk ppl. 'cause they are known to sell YOUNG bunnies, as young as about 3 weeks old. ok.... to answer your qns... 1) not advisable to get such young bunnies 'cause they are forced to wean off early. they might have many health problems in future. the longer the bunnies weaned off, the less problems they'll have in future. u see groundnut and peanut and compare them with puppy. puppy got so much problems. actually i feel that it's not good to buy bunnies from petshops. 'cause they usually sell them at super young age. they wont sell bunnies only when they reach 2 months old. 2) give bunny better quality pellets and hay. dun go for cheap stuff, just 'cause it's cheap. there's no such thing as cheap and good. it's either u pay more on the food and hay, or pay MUCH more on medical bills. 3) plenty of water. fresh boiled water. change it daily. 4) NO veggies or fruits allowed. can only feed to bunnies who are about 6 months old. will result in diarrhoea if feed too young. and can result to death. diarrhoea to young bunnies can be fatal. 5) treats should be given SPARINGLY. anything that's high in sugar content should be given SPARINGLY. no human treats allowed. unless u want ur bunnies to have problems in future. wat treats to give... i actually dun like commercial treats. if i want to give them treats, i prefer giving fruits (eg. apples and watermelon). but small quantities 'cause of high sugar content. 6) corn cob beddings are not advisable. best to use paper pelleted beddings. shavings not advisable too 'cause of the dust. some bunnies are allergic to it.

Just wondering what are the things to watch out for when one buys a young bunny home?what shld be the correct diet ,the right beddings & the best treats to give to them? 1) When buying a bunny, must make sure it is at least 2 months old(separated from mother EARLIEST when its 2 months old) and check the backside, nose n eyes for wetness.....diahorrea, discharge tt is milky. They should also b alert n responds well to the environment. 2)the proper diet to give to a young bunny should b unlimited pellets(cos they are stil growing) and plenty of hay. some people say for young bunnies below 6 months to feed alfafa based pellets n then switch over to timothy pellets when they are older.that could work but do take note that for bunnies, when u wanna change the diet,u gotta do it SLOWLY over a month or so.So around the time the bunny reaches 5 months old can start switching slowly to timothy pellets n vegs..(slowly increasing vegs n decreasing pellets).A good basic hay to give is timothy hay. there are other tpes of cos n u can feel free to give...like oat hay, orchard grass etc. (just limit the alfafa hay) 3)beddings for young bunnies should b same as the ones for older bunnies...some bunnies do get used to a certain bedding n will not use anything different. good choices will b BC cat litter, Oxbow Ecofresh,Oxbow ASpenFesh n Carefresh. heard some prety good stuff about these beddings tho i stil think BC is the best. 4) Treats should b limited. given sparingly as puppy say. Bunnies in teh first place have sensitive digestive systems, young bunnies even more so.watch out for diahorrea when u give treats. 5) lastly....also take note that young bunnies need plenty of exercise.let them out for free runs at least once a day.Bunny Proof ur house! or else end up woth bitten wires n torn sofa covers like me. hope that answers

This is where Education play a important role in the pet the industry. The pet shops are the front line, and they should find out more how knowledgable the buyer is and should guide them on the diet care etc should the buyer be a first time bunny owner.
Many ppl buy small animals on impulse without making enough research/reading and assume that it is low cost and easy to maintain. Like this person who bought the young bunny and fed a carrot a day... the misconception again, that rabbit is associate with carrot. This is what bugs bunny cartoon has educated many ppl in the world.
When a bunny gave health problem becoz of human ignorance, ultimately, the bunny suffered.

Ya....i brought my first bunnies last time when sick to the zoo vet n he told me tt only cartoon bunnies eat carrots..real bunnies should eat grass(ie hay).... agree that education is very important..but its not just the pet shops...people in themselves have to WANT to b educated. there are people...no matter how much u tell them, they will stil do things THEIR way n ignore whatever u might say. but agree that pet shops should try to educate people as much as possible.

ya lor... petshops play an important role here. if they can think less about profits and care more about welfare of pets, that'll be good. i feel that govt should be responsible also. if govt can help out on the shop rental fee and all the maintenance cost of having own business, so petshops no need to earn so much just to make business survive. then things will get better.

yah lor which pet kiosk huh? I always go to the pets saloon... the one doing grooming... and I think their bunnies are quite healthy looking leh. One of the holland lop loves our attention so much! It was always standing nearer to the exterior of teh cage so that we can stroke him. I asked abt the price and gosh... it costs $200++... and the beautiful lady still dare to tell me that it's locally bred.
Perhaps it's really the girl who didn't feed the bunny a proper diet leh? Anyway Pet Kiosk people also gave me false information one...
The auntie told me not to feed fresh vege to my rabbit and should give those commercial fruit treats to my bunny instead.

high heels > petshops usu will sell healthy looking bunnies. but they may not be really healthy inside. u know what i mean? only after buy liao, keep for a few months / years, then the problems will start to show. all these is 'cause they wean off their bunnies at too young age. and condition, food,... all not good. they'll ask u not to feed fruits / veggies, give a lot of stupid reasons, 'cause they can con u to buy their products. so they can earn $$ mah... they usu can see who are the experienced ones, who are not. then they try to con those who are not experienced.
