This week, one of my chinchillas fell ill. He is Snowball, a silver white young male. He stopped eating and started trembling on Sunday, after a long exercise, bath and treats. I gave him 4 small raisins and 1 hazelnut. When he refused to eat as time passed, I got worried and brought him to the vet. On Tue, I brought him to Namly Animal Clinic to see Dr Ling. She checked him carefully and concluded that it appeared to be bloat in his stomach. He was also slightly constipated. Snowball was prescribed Vitamin B and Val Syrup (smells like Bovril to me). The next day, he appeared to be very much better. Dr Ling also told me to buy V8 Juice (veg juice) and Yoghurt to feed him. 0.2ml daily each. Also, I had to add honey and salt to his drinking water, just a little bit. He is now better (I think not fully recovered yet), but his appetite is back. He is eating well now. Note that a chinchilla who doesn't eat is one of the sure signs that something is wrong. Just want to share my experience with others. His symptoms were no appetite and his limbs kept trembling, he had little control over them. He couldn't walk properly on Monday. Remember that prompt medical attention is needed for chinchillas, as they deteoriate very quickly.

Well, I think Snowball got bloat coz of my mistake. Firstly, I shldn't have fed him immediately after he had exercised vigorously. He shld hv taken a rest between each activity, even between running and bathing. The exercise took alot out of him. Then Dr Ling told me I shld limit raisins to only 1 per chin, per week (or each time I guess). 4 was too much for him, especially when he's so young. My other chins can take abt 3 or 4 raisins each time, but they're all a few yrs old already. But I'm cutting down on their raisins too, just in case. Just 1 each, I'll follow Dr Ling's instructions. Plus I fed him a hazelnut which is starchy. All these are too rich for him, so he fell sick. I remember his stomach was very round and swollen, quite scary. He's a little better now. He hated taking his medicine, but these days, he's accepted it. He'll even take it eagerly now coz he anticipates the yoghurt at the end. I feed him that last. He'll keep pulling and biting on the syringe long after he finished the yogurt. Also, while he's recovering, I had to cut out all treats, starchy food (nuts and rolled oats), baths and exercise. He needs lots of rest. But as he is getting restless now, I may let him out very soon, just for a very short while. Oh yes, I'm sure indigestion is a factor, but it wldn't hv come abt if not for the situation also.

another method :- your chin can also have a dose of acidophilus and require more exercise outside of the cage at more frequent intervals.

Yes, that's the good bacteria right? It's also present in some brands of yogurt. Mine has it, so it's part of his medication. I can let him exercise, but really not too much cos sometimes, chinchillas dunno when to stop. They'll keep jumping and playing and wear themselves out. Then lay flat on the floor to rest after exhaustion. That's not very healthy, so I watch him and stop him when I think he's had enough.

Actually, I think humans get bloat too, but ours is less serious. I think it's like eat too much and get indigestion that kind. Then we can drink Eno or the other kind of gas drink, supposed to help us get rid of air in our stomach. It's about the same thing, just that more serious for chinchillas.
