hi,
two months ago, my chin was having fungus on both his front legs. Initially, i thought that he is bitting his fur due to stress as my neighbourhood is under upgrading.
Later, things got worsen. The fungus started to spread from his front legs to his chin and his left eye. I brought him to see several vet but things didn't get better. Some vet prescribe cleanse and ointment to him. He don't like it and keep on scratching. Things worsen and the patches become bigger.
Finally, i brought him to Namly Place to see Dr Ling and currently after his 3rd visits there, he is clean from fungus. However, Dr Ling says that the fur on his front legs might not grow.
Dr Ling ask me not to apply anything on him since he don't like it. She only prescribe me with anti-fungus medicine and ask me to feed him with Vitamin C 100mg chewable tablet once a day. And i also bought a cooler fan for my chin to reduce the hot humid weather.
Causes of the Fungus is through hot humid weather. During hot weather, pls don't blow the fan directly at your chin. Try to circulate the fan to reduce the hot air in the environment. Another thing to take note is to clean the cage and bedding frequently. Sympton of Fungus : loss of fur in patches and red pinkish skin are seen and itchiness.
Currently, i'm using Cleanse to clean his flooring, urine tray and the tile which he sleep on twice a day. For his cage, i clean once a week.
For dust bathing, i'm used Kaytee dustbath (Transparent Bottle) to bathe him previously but now i add another ingredient (Athletic Foot Powder) with the kaytee dustbath in his bath tub which is to prevent him from having fungus again.
Hope that this article will help those chins owner to prevent and cure fungus.

hi ghost,
thanks, intially i also don't know that it could cause fungus. But fortunately, he is well and i hope that all chins won't kena fungus as it is a terrible sickness.
It's very difficult to take care of them if they are having this illness as they tend to scratch a lot and there is nothing that we can do.

Ic...then have to really keep a close watch on Baby....since if there is a 1st time, the chance of a 2nd time could happen if u r not careful.....i think the main solution is to keep his cage area cool & clean.... Glad u only have one pet,so your focus will only be on him, your chins alone....

Repeat cases of fungus is chins can be very common, it's true. One thing to note abt fungus, if it spreads to the point that it's generalised over the chin, it weakens the chin. Immune system drops and infections set in easily. I lost my TOV male to a bacterial infection which settled in his lungs after fungus. Even with regular visits to the vet, we had no idea he had the infection until it was too late, when he collapsed one morning. There is no fixed time when the fungus can occur, ghost. It totally depends on the climate and environment. If my chin is cleared from fungus, he can still get it just 1 week later if my room is not cleaned of fungus, and I dun keep him clean. Prevention is the best, but pls note that athlete's foot powder is not a foolproof prevention for fungus. Cos I used it regularly for months, and he still got it. Of course, other ways to prevent it include high standards of hygiene and quarantine of sick animals. Fungus is easily spread from animal to animal. So if a pair of chins are kept together, one chin may suffer from it and infect the other. But I've noticed that some chins seem to be not susceptible to fungus. But I wldn't bet on this too much. My Spider used to have fungus and has since recovered. But Slappy, who lives with him, showed totally no signs of it and was very healthy. She didn't scratch excessively and lost no fur at all. She was really healthy and still is now. The point is, she never caught fungus all the time she was living with Spider. Anyway, I'm really glad your chin recovered.

hi ghost and clover,
i read from the internet website that athlete foot powder must contain a substance call "Tolnaftate" then it will help to prevent or the fungus which the chin have on his body.
I don't know how true it is but i just bought the normal type of sholl brand athlete foot powder for him to bath with bathdust. Indeed, it help to cure with the help of antibiotic which the vet prescribed.
However Dr Ling did advised me to continue using the athlete foot powder.
Touchwood, if anyone of the chin has fungus, pls don't apply cream or ointment on him as things might get worse.
Whenever i apply ointment on him, he would just rub against it and made the fur untidy and somemore, the next day, the patches of fur that he has loss became bigger. This is what i had experience.
Other than bathing with athlete foot powder, i switch on the cooler fan for 24 hrs, blowing the surrounding to reduce the temperature and most importantly i place him in a shady place.
Other than that, i can't think of other way to prevent fungus. If you guys have other ways or solutions, pls do share with me.
thanks.

My prevention is to give them sand bathing 2-4 times a week. Never put them under the sun and keep the place cool.

I think fungus prevention is mostly just maintain high standards of hygiene. And always wash your hands after handling your pets. For me, cos of my previous experience, I always wash my hands when changing animals. So during feeding time, you'll see me wash my hands several times. Cos once for rabbit change to chin, then wash again, after chins is hamsters, then wash again, then feed guinea pigs. The rest is by my bf, who has to go thru the same thing.
When my Totoro had fungus, he had to take medicine. It's called Sporanox. He was never prescribed any creams or anything. He had to eat the medicine. Umm, I was just trying to explain the athlete's foot powder is not foolproof. Cos other chin owners use it, quite a few in fact. But chins can still get fungus. And we all use different brands. It's not just that ingredient in the powder, but that the powder alone is not enough prevention.
