Hi,
I would like to share my recent experience (and sudden loss) to all Chinchilla lovers :
My 4-month-old "Baby" suddenly departed a couple of days ago. Initially he had an eye infection. We brought him to the vet on 26 July evening. He was given an eye drop and eye gel. And to prevent him from scratching his left eye ( after applying the medicine), we were told to put a plastic "collar" round his neck. When we brought him home, he was okay....can eat & drink & jump around his double storey cage. He even responded to his usual tricks; that is wriggling his nose when I put my nose near him. Then on Sunday night, I discovered he wasn't eating his pellets & hay. I hand-fed him but he just nibbled a few pellets. Gave him his treats too ( papaya ) but he just doesn't seems interested. He is one whom loves his papaya and will never resists them; in fact he always "begs" for more. Not his usual self too 'cos he just stayed at one corner of the cage. ( He is one active fellow who will jump up & down & around his "semi-d" whenever I am around) I then realised something is very wrong. I suspected Baby might have broke his neck or throat 'cos all this while he was still wearing that "collar". Hence I stayed up all night to check on him, making sure he did not hurt himself further more. And I also removed that "collar" despite the vet's instruction. On Monday morning, he wasn't touching any food nor water. That means he has not been eating for the past 24 hours. I called the vet & she suggested I brought Baby to the clinic again. Vet checked on him...good news is his eye infection was cured. Bad news is...vet did not know what happened to him!! On Monday evening, his condition worsen. He was so weak that he can't even stand straight. I cried & beg him to eat some food;hand-fed him but it seems he cannot even swallow the food. Then on Tuesday noon, he couldn't stand nor sit anymore, had to lie on his side. I was with him all these while, keeping him company till his last breathe. Gosh...my tears are flowing as I am relating this now.
I was the first person whom witness his birth and also the last person to witness his death. I was there to help him when he was born, and I was also there to bury him.
This experience has taught me a lesson, a very graveful and painful one....NEVER, EVER put that "collar" round your Chins. It might applies to dogs & cats, but definitely not a Chinchilla.
