Pls clean your chinchilla's ear regularly. Follow the instructions below, I got them from Dr Cathy Chan of Bishan Park Vet Clinic. She also did a demo for me to see.
Use saline, cotton wool and cotton bud. Pour some saline onto the cotton wool, wipe the outer ear flap several times. Then use another piece of cotton wool with a little saline on it, wipe the inner ear flap. Never use too much saline on the cotton wool or pour saline into the ear, it worsens the condition. You can dig gently into the inner ear with the cotton wool to rub out dirt. Note that this part is actually similar to cleaning a dog's ear.
After that, use a dry cotton bud to clean the inner ear flap and dig out any piece of dirt that YOU CAN SEE. DON'T ANYHOW DIG IF YOU DON'T SEE ANY DIRT! If you can't see it, means too deep already, don't dig anymore. You'll hurt the chin.
You'll need 2 pple to clean a chin's ears. One person to hold and one person to clean. My bf held the chin while I cleaned its ears. But I suggest wearing cotton gloves for it, cos it can take up to 5 min. Try not to take too long cos the chin may feel stressed out. The cotton gloves are for protection. My bf got bitten more than 4 times by each chin, as they are very disgruntled by the cleaning. But it's necessary. Do it once a week or once in 2 weeks. Don't do this too often. I think it's possible that the ears may become dry, if you clean them too often. Right now, I clean their ears once in 2 weeks. If it doesn't feel dirty to me, I skip the cleaning. But at least must check 1 week later.
You'll know how to tell between a clean ear and a dirty ear, when you rub the surface. There are tiny bits of dirt that roll between your fingers, from a dirty ear.
