Pneumonia in guinea pigs is caused by several bacteria ( Bordetella bronchiseptica , Streptococcus zooepidemicus , S pneumoniae , Klebsiella pneumoniae , or Pasteurella pneumotropica ). Clinical signs are of respiratory distress. Diagnosis is based on signs, pneumonic lesions, and isolation and identification of the causative organism. Prevention and control depend on maintenance of good husbandry and culling of affected guinea pigs. Antibiotic therapy should be considered cautiously because most commonly used antibiotics are toxic for guinea pigs (see above). Treatment with tetracycline (PO or parenterally) or chloramphenicol (parenterally) may be helpful.

In addition, if the cavy starts sneezing or having a runny nose, it is STRONGLY ADVISED to be seen by a vet cos' it may be signs of a late stage pneumonia.......and sad to say, at a late stage, the vet can only tell u," Be prepared!!!"

If a cavy is sick,we send them to a vet..what can are their chances of recovery? tat's the problem i encounter with cavies... unlike your other type of pets like rabbits, hamsters, etc, i find that the desire to survive for cavies aren't great at all... when infected with a virus, cavies tend to just sit around and wait for death to come knocking on their doors. 9 out of 10 times a cavies visit the vet which may be encountering life threatening instances, the vet's comments would always be," better get yourselves prepared..." Sad but true lor
