My female dutch tri-color texel gave birth yesterday afternoon. I happened to see the babies just as they popped out and she cleaned them up. But they are 2 very small and thin babies. I worry if they'll survive. Months before, Bubbles gave birth prematurely to a single baby, but that one died also. It was stilborn.
There are 2 babies, one is a red eye white, and the other baby is a bi-color. Sure enough, this morning, when I woke up, the white baby was dead. I'm very worried abt the bi-color one and ready to force feed it from Bubbles if I can. Cos she is a first-time mother, and her previous single birth had been unsuccessful. She doesn't seem to know what to do. I'll be checking her regularly and trying to force her to feed the baby.
Meanwhile, she gets more food than the others, and I've changed her diet to alfalfa. She'll need it alot, plus rolled oats. Oregon, her mate, is now living in a carrier. I got no more spare cage, so no choice. And I dun wan him mating with her immediately after the birth. I hope this little fella will survive.

Keke, I'm glad to tell you all that the black and white baby is doing ok. He is still weak, no doubt, being premature. But he is still alive, and each day he lives, he'll grow stronger.

No, I haven't named the baby, most probably cos I won't be keeping it. I'll be selling it. Cos I actually have a limit on the number of pigs I can keep, a bargain with my mum from before. But I'll be keeping its parents though, can't let those go, very attached to them already.
Yesterday night, I examined the baby closely and found one eye sealed shut with white tears. I cleaned it and managed to open the eye, but found that the pupil below is a bit milky. I hope his eye is not blind, I dunno how to test it. I flick my finger, try and test both sides, but he ignored my finger.

I'm really nuts abt GPs tho....wonder if i can apply my methods i knew on hamsters to GPs....sorry in advance 1st..... Avoid trying to force/pry open the eyes...but clean em w saline or some eye drop solutions regularly to allow it to open as naturally as possible....as for how to test if it's blind....thik u will have to wait till the baby grow up a little 1st,hehe....me use to be an Optician many years back....never test eyes for GPs before tho,hehehe.....*joking*.....

I've been using saline to clean his eye everyday. It alwiz seals shut again by the next day. Quite frustrating and I'm worried. Yes, I can touch the guinea pig bb since day 1. Guinea pigs are more relaxed with their bb. Their bb are born with fur and open eyes, and can eat solid food immediately. Bubbles won't abandon her bb even though I've touched him. But Oregon, the father, is not a very gd dad. It depends on the male guinea pig involved. Oregon was trampling all over the bb at first, so I removed him. That clumsy oaf. Teddy, my other male, was a very gd dad last time. I didn't have to remove him at all, cos he was alwiz conscious of bb and gave way to them. Oregon is totally unlike him, argh. I actually had no choice but to let Oregon live with Teddy temporarily, cos I got no spare cage and I dun wan him to live in the carrier. At first, I tot they wld fight, but in the end, they didn't. Oregon, the stupid bossy boy, kept mounting and squealing at Teddy. Teddy finally fed up, nipped his leg when he tried to mount him again. Then Oregon retreated. But Teddy never attack him, just sit down and keep eating and ignore him. Now they are living in peace, just that Oregon likes to boss Teddy around. The bb is quite healthy now, gradually putting on weight. I'm only worried abt his eye condition now.

The baby was born on 3rd June. Still very young now, I want to wait till he's abt 1 month old then I bring him to the vet. I know there is the risk that it's too late by then to save his eye, but he's very young now and I dun wanna stress him. When I clean his eye, he's alwiz terrified. Keep wheeking like I'm torturing him like that. And Bubbles will keep wheeking too, probably thinking I'm torturing her baby. I'll post up pics of him soon, maybe next week. Actually, he looks like any other normal texel, just that he's tiny. Hehe. He is now only abt half my palm size only, abt the size of a syrian hamster.

Please take good care of them........will be looking forward to their pics....maybe wait for them to grow up a little bit bigger & stronger before taking their pics.....

hmm... perhaps if you use a moist cotton pad dipped in H 2O instead of saline, it would be more comfortable for the cavy... I would assume that it maybe the saline solution that stings the eye of the cavy which makes it squeel so much

Keke, I'm happy to say that the baby's eye is okie now! I checked it and it's open and no longer closed. I posted my topic on CG, and the members suggested dehydration, of which a symptom is tearing eyes. I think that's the case cos now, the baby knows where the water bottle is. Maybe last time, he didn't know where it is and he had to get a drink from only his mum. She must have shown him where the bottle is recently. His eye has cleared up, there is no more milkiness and he is doing okie. I dunno if the baby was wheeking to say thank you, but I dun think so, cos he must feel very uncomfortable with me prodding and wiping his eye. Hehe. Oooh, but I actually tot saline does not sting...but then, I'm not sure. Probably better to ask a vet...
