Ok ok ! First, let me apologize for my poor photographing skills. Gerbils are very very hard to be photographed. Let me introduce you to the parents Ben and Sarah. If you look carefully at the top right hand corner, you will see the nest and a couple of heads... This is Sarah, the mother. She's a cinnamon although the proper term should be Argente Golden. One of my favourite colours. Isn't she pretty ? img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-9/407768/sarahclose.JPG[/img] Sarah Ben and Sarah img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-9/407768/sarahben.JPG[/img] One of the main reasons why I wanted to breed Ben was because he was such a handsome fellow and I think someone told me he was the only spotted black in singapore. The other reason was because he has a beautiful personality. You can read more about him in my gerbil website and there's a close-up picture of him too. He really knows how to look after the babies for a first time father. He keeps them warm when Sarah goes foraging for food and when she goes off to dig. Especially these few days, the weather is so cold and I placed them near the window...when Sarah is nursing her babies, he will wrap himself around his whole family including Sarah to keep them warm. Sarah will then gladly use him as a pillow and blanket. img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-9/407768/benbaby.JPG[/img] Ok, time for the closeup on the nest. From calculating their genes, I had expected only half the litter (there are four babies) to be spotted only to surprised that all four of them are spotted. So I have four minatures of Ben. img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-9/407768/babygerbs2.JPG[/img] The nest img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-9/407768/babygerbs.JPG[/img] I was lucky, one of the bolder babies decided to venture out of the nest and 'explore'. I quickly snapped a picture before Sarah came over, pick the baby up by the scruff and brought it back to the nest. But don't be fooled, when both parents go into digging mode, they kick everything...including the babies...sometimes, from one end to the other. That's why they're very hardy animals. img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-9/407768/babygerb.JPG[/img] if you want to know more about gerbils, please go the following website www.geocities.com/smalltowngerbils/
