Handling
Before you handle your hamster you will need to tame it. Do not put it off, because it will be easier while your hamster is still young.
Talk to your hamster while you're taming it. It will get to know your voice.
Hamsters bite only when they are frightened. If your hamster does nip your finger, it is best to put it back in its cage and leave it alone a couple of hours so that it can calm down.
You should be able to tame your hamster in about three weeks if you follow this method. Do not rush it, or you may have to start all over again.
1. First watch your hammy for a few days to find out when it is awake and active - the best time to start taming. Note its favorite foods so you can use them to overcome its fear. Now start putting food straight on the cage floor, so your hamster gets used to your hand and learns that it brings food. After a few days, leave your hand there while the hamster eats.
2. When your hamster is confident enough to eat beside your hand, put the food in the palm of your hand. It may a while before the hamster will eat from your hand without fear. When it does, you can stroke it gently with one finger along its back. Never stroke its head.
3. Next, get your hamster used to being picked up. When it is eating from your hand, cup the other hand over it, and lift it gently a little way off the ground for a few moments at a time. After a few more days, if your hammy seems happy being lifted up, you can take it right out of the cage in your cupped hands.
4. Play with it near the ground so that if you drop it or it jumps out of your hands, it doesn't have a long way to fall. Let it run from one hand to the other. Soon it will be confident enough to run along your arm.

About LOst Hamsters>> A Lost Hammy! Don't lose hope yet! Here are some different techniques I've heard of to use if your hamster gets lost-- Try putting food in the cage and leave it with a door/hole open near where you think the hamster is hiding. During the night the hungry hammy might return to its cage. Spread some sunflower seeds in each room, counting the number you leave in each room, and then shut all the doors. (Do this at night before you go to bed) The next morning you will easily be able to tell which room your hamster is in, so this will hopefully narrow down your search. Once you know which room your hamster is in, make sure you keep that door closed. You can then use of the previously mentioned methods to recapture your hamster. Make a ramp with a piece of wood up to a bucket in which you have put some food. Then, make a little trail of food on the floor, up the piece of wood, and finally put enough food in the bucket so your hamster will jump on in, when he/she discover this treasure. But make sure the bucket is tall enough so your hamster can't climb out the side and escape again. Or maybe you could put butter on the sides of the bucket like suggested in the next tactic. Polar suggests: First place butter on the inside sides of an old jar. Next, place peanut butter on the bottom on the jar. Then stack books up in a /\ shape. Last place the jar in the middle of the /\. D. Harkins says: I had a hammy that got away in the house too. I would set food out and TRY to stay awake to see him. 3 nights went by and the food would be gone and I would end up asleep. Then I had an idea that worked! I took a carrot stick and laid it on the floor. I tied a long string with bells onto the carrot. I also had a 2x4 laying on the floor so when he took the carrot the bells would hit the wood and make a noise. That night I heard the bells and found out where he was hiding because of the long string. It sounds nutty but it worked! Robyn says: I have two hamsters and every once in a while they escape. This is what I do. I pour their hamster mix on the floor in a pile. Then I make a make a circle of flour around the pile. Finally I follow the little paw prints right to my hamster. Another very simple way is turn off all noises like the T.V or fan and stand very still and you might hear your hamster moving around. ~ Information From Internet. ~ Don't Lose Hope! Good Luck! About Taming Hamsters >> Jus thought i'd share my experince everyone here on how to tame hamsters,hehe......anyone got better ways.....do share it out, can?so that it'll benefits those who own hamsters as pets here.......Thank you all..... Alrite, for those untame hamsters when i adopt em,i leave em under observation w/o really touching em for abt a week or so,use a food tray to transport em if cleaning up of their cages is needed........then for another 7 days,i will hand feed em,making the hamsters tip toe to get their food(minimal mix).......this will take quite a lot of time & hard work,so the short cut ways will be,just make em tip-toe to grab 3-5 pieces of their food & put the rest in the food tray.....jus make sure if there r 2 hamsters, let the 2 hamsters each able to grab 3-5 pieces of food fr your hand....... After the 2nd week, handfeed em by filling up your palm w food & put em near the food tray to feed em........if they attempt to bite, move away.......& don't feed em for the next 1 hour or so.........if u drop all the food into the food tray, then don't feed em anymore......but if drop partially u may still continue to the next step........that would be 1 hour later when u handfeed em again the same way/method........putting food in your palm & put near the food tray again,so that the ham will come to your hand......if they bite,or attempt to bite again, move away & don't feed em for the next one hour again.........repeat this steps at least 3 times a day everyday for the next 7 days again.......after that if u decide to call it a day when they still attempt to bite u,feed em w jus enough food to last em a day only(for me is 1 teasthingy only)........well thruout the entire process, rewards may b given to those hamsters who doesn't bite u any more.......or didnt attempt to bite u....... If all things goes well,on the 4th week.....hand feed em w the food in your palm near the food tray for another 7 days.............your hamsters shld have given up attempting to bite u by then as he/she aldy knows your hand is their sole-food provider.......& they also knows the scent of your hand smell.......oh,1 more thing to take note.......make sure u wash your hands well b4 feedings & do make it a habit to do so.......cos if your hand got food smell fr the things u eat jus now or hours ago.......they SURE BITE!!! A lot of patience & time is use to tame hamsters tho.......& my most hardcore hamsters(4 & 1/2 months old) takes a maximum of 4 weeks to be tame........as those mention above, one can talk to em as well so as to let your ham know your voice too,but not too loud as our normal talking voice is like thunder to our hamsters......... ;D 1 more thing to share, all my taming methods r taught by observing Elna,my super most fiercest campbell hamster among all my other hamsters........ & any credits to me,if there is,(on taming hamsters) shld in turn goes to her(elna) instead as she is where i learn how to tame a hamsters from(& knowing a hamsters behaviour)........that's about all, hereby wish u all good luck & hav a good time w your hamsters........ Jus to add, another ways to let your ham knows your scent well is to put your hands in its beddings so that your hammie will know his/her own scent instead........ Above is my own experince extract from SPF,hehe.......hope it'll help hamsters owners to tame their beloved pets.......anything else to add? do share it out.....

About Taming Hamsters>> How easily a hamster is tamed for handling depends on a lot of factors. The attitude and difficulty of taming them depends on the following factors: 1.Temperament of hamster is inherited from parents. If its parents are nippy, it is highly possible for their off springs to be nippy. 2.The environment plays a part too. Previous trauma or rough handling can results in a bad temper. Not to worry. There are ways to tame them. The most crucial factor is PATIENCE. 1.Bathe them with water and shampoo if you know how to. Keep them warm with your body heat by holding them in your palms as you rub their fur dry with a clothe. They will remain quite still. This is a chance for them to smell you. 2. Place food on your palms during feeding time. Let them retrieve food from your hand directly. Be alert enough to withdraw your hands when you sense that they might bite you. Try this technique again in the next feeding time if it fails. Perhaps you can finger through their bedding so that your hand have their smell which is familiar to them. 3. Wet your finger tip with water and place it in front of a thirsty hamster. How to make a hamster thirsty that is up to your own plot. They would lick water from your finger tip. This helps them to recognize your smell too. 4. Carry them in your palms and stroke their back gently. Do not carry them directly as they are still alien to you. Place a food dish or a jar lid in front of them. Let them climb up onto this platform. Raise it higher so that they will not jump down as they are afraid of heights. Then place your palm beside the platform to let the hamster climb onto your palm willingly. Normally, they will take a few sniff at your hand and try a few steps before embarking fully on your palm. Cup them into your palms gently now. If they do still bite you, it will be quite gentle. Return them back home and try another day. If they wriggle about, cup them up like a small burrow. They like the sense of security especially when it is warm inside. When they try to pop their head out, blow gently at their face and they would return back to your hands again. 5. Try a change of environment, with new toys or refurnished ones. They are temperamental creatures which can change with surroundings too. 6. However, some hamsters are really stubborn and refuse to be tame. Then perhaps you would like to try the "harsh" way out. Locate the point at their neck, the place where their mummy used to bite and fetch them back to nest, or the point where most of the beginners would pick them up with. With your hand displaying a "good sign" or "thumbs up", apply slight pressure on that spot with your thumb and the rest of the fingers on their back. They will freeze for a moment, then tried to struggle out of your pin. Adjust your pressure according to control their movement. This is to show control over them. This seems easy, but the most difficult part lies in getting your thumb on their Achilles Heel first. This will have to depend on timing, angle of your finger and how agile you are compared to your pet. A few tries will enables you for better control of the situation. This is another method to tame hamsters contributed by a fren from another forum in SHF....
