Taken from "Singapore Dog - K9 facts, figures & Fancies" by Dr Lennie Lee Koon Ann & Ilsa Sharp
There is a confusion about various diseases that some people think are carried by dogs, but in fact are not:
Toxoplasmosis Dogs can be infected with this jaundice-like disease but they do not spread it to humans or other animals.
Flu
Hepatitis The hep virus that dogs get is different from the human one, there is no risk of cross-infection
Multiple Sclerosis a chronic progressive disease of the human nervous system
Lupus Ulcerative Skin Disease
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Meliodosis or "tropical soil disease" Like humans, dogs can pick this up from the soil but there have been no cases of dogs transmitting the bacteria to humans
Pinworms
Headlice
Asthma Pet animals do not cause asthma, which is an inherited problem. Animal hair and saliva are not as great a trigger for asthma as house dust, dust mites, pollen, stress and cold water, for example. So don't rush to get rid of the family dog because one of your kids gets asthma
There is some recent evidence from US studies that children raised with cats and dogs are less at risk of developing allergies than those who have no pets in the house. It seems that being close to pet animals may raise children's immune system
now, if only more parents could be educated on this... ;D
