There are many people out there who wanna get a dog... but always asking things like how much will the food cost? Where to buy cheap dogs? Where can I get a free dog ? How much are the vet fees when I do need to bring him/her there?
Making a decision to have a dog needs a lot of careful planning and serious thoughts.
A dog's life span is about 15 years or so, though some of them are said to live up to 20 years even. Do you have that kind of commitment and responsibility?
How does your family take to your decision of having a dog? It would be a necessity to talk to your family about having an extra member in the house.
Where do you live? A house, flat, or HDB... would depend on what kind of dog is most suitable for you. I've some friends who keep big dogs in their HDB flats, which may not be a good idea. However, they make up for it by bringing in for frequent walks and play.
Dogs cost a lot to maintain, feed, and sometimes "clothed" Do you have spare cash? A visit to the vet that cost anywhere between $40 and upwards. Some vet bills have said to be as high as close to $1,000 even, depending on what is wrong with the dog.
How will the dog fit in your lifestyle? Do you work long hours? Or your work requires you to travel often? Or are you one of those who loves to stay indoors and watch TV, or just sleep. It'd be unfair for an active dog to live that kind of lifestyle.
Types of furniture in the house also plays a role. Puppies tend to chew alot, or at most times, when they're not toilet trained, pee on carpets...
How do feel about your Doggies' Waste? Are you ok with having to pick up your dog's poo when you're out for a walk? Sometimes, it is ill and gets diarrhoea. Are you okay with cleaning up the mess?
Does your dog require grooming? Do you have the time, and are willing to make an effort to do so? Sending your doggy to the groomers may be an idea, but nothing beats doing the grooming yourself. Cos' that may be a way of spending some time with him/her.
Vet fees? well, there the routine works which includes, vaccination. All puppies usually go through 3, and after that a yearly booster. Regular deworming, and deticking, cleaning of ears, cutting of nails, dental care for some dogs, and just routine medical check up. And then sometimes when they fall ill, you'd gotta bring them to the vet... and that's bills to pay...
So, please do give it some thought when you're really thinking of having that pouchie ...
