When you bring a puppy back home, the first thing u will probably have to teach the cutie is where to poo/pee. One of the most frequently asked question is "How do we toilet train the dog?"
Here,a rough guide ;D
First decide a spot as to WHERE u want ur dog to poo/pee and stick to that spot. Changing the position constantly will confuse the poor puppy.
U might want to consider if u want to have the dog use the toilet or jus on newspapers in a corner of the house. If u have a big dog,my advice is to try to train it to use the toilet cos its easier to wash away the huge poo poo and the pee is really too much for newspapers to contain. Small dogs are generally ok jus using papers.
Another thing to consider is,WHO is going to be the primary trainer for the puppy? This person should ideally be the one who feeds/bathes/walks/spends the most time with the dog. This person has to establish himself/herself as the alpha role in the dog/owner relationship. The dog should know that this person is the one in charge and the one to discipline him/her. Should he/her do any wrong,he/she will know that this alpha will punish him/her.
Then comes the work. When the puppy pees/poo anywhere out of the designated spot,if u can, catch it in the act, quickly grab the puppy and plant him/her at the designated spot and say firmly "HERE".
But of cos, most of us are too slow to catch the doggie in the act..so what next? When it does pee/poo outside the spot, pick up the puppy,go to the pee/poo,press his head firmly down near the pee/poo,make ur displeasure known, say firmly "NO!",smack him(with hands,newspapers,cane--up to you, whatever works for u) and then pick him up quickly, bring to the designated spot and put him there, say firmly but gently "HERE." and stroke him (sayang!) U have to keep doing it over n over again,EVERYTIME he pees/poo outside the designated spot. Once he gets the hang of it,when he starts peeing/pooing at the spot, maybe he will be a little off target but if its near enough,PRAISE him. Let him know he did it right. Give him a little treat if he does it on the papers. It takes a lot of patience but u have to keep doing it and the doggie will get the idea somehow at some point. NEVER give up halfway. This is just one method that i used and succeeded with.
A commercial housebreaking aid is available in pet shops.U can drip some drops on papers and let them smell it. They will somehow slowly get the point that is where they should pee. There are also puppy housebreaking pads that u can get from pet shops, they look like diapers u can spread out on top of papers and they are pretreated and helps the puppy to establish that spot as peeing/poo-ing spot. But if u use these aids, dun expect a miracle! they might work better for some than others,u can use these aids to complement the training detailed above.
Another recommended way of housebreaking a dog is to use crate training. It is well explained in this website www.muchlove.org/housebreaking.htm. A few other good websites will be www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=2&cat=1548&articleid=157 and www.chowwelfare.com/cciw/housebk.htm......WHEN TO START?www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=2&cat=1548&articleid=175.
Hope this is useful. ;D
