Feline Fanciers Society of Singapore (FFSS) is a premier membership club for all cat lovers. Our goal is to promote the appreciation of cats and to act as a body that provides total lifestyle for cat owners through education and support.

hi leoric, the FFSS is a society for cat lovers basically. It strives to educate its members about cat care and ownership and promotes ethical breeding (for registered breeders). FFSS wishes to Create General Awareness and Appreciation of Pedigree Cats through Fostering Good Relationship Amongst the General Public, Cat Fanciers/Owners, Breeders Community & the Pet Industry (quoted). the website will tell u more.. but if u would like to get a first hand experience of what the club does.. the feline fling with PLC will be held at east point mall on 28 and 29 may. do drop by to chk the cats out and u can find out more abt the club there.. hope to c u there.

hmm.. just to add a bit.. some people might ask.. why have a society for pedigree cats.. why not take care of the strays and unwanted cats..

well, the answer is, there are already a lot of organizations which cater to stray cats. here and around the globe. pedigrees are endangered species in a way. a couple of years back, only 83 korats were registered in the cfa. the cfa is the largest registry of purebred cats. the korat is a natural breed from thailand. though lesser known compared to its fren the siamese, the korat is a rare and beautiful breed.
Scenario 1: Backyard breeders and kitty mills breed pedigree cats.Birthing queens are not allowed breaks in between pregnancies and inline breeding occurs frequently which can bring about genetic problems. if cats with genetic problems were bred to genetically sound cats, these cats would be affected too. and there begins the downfall of the breed, which can eventually lead to extinction. why extinction? the singapura cat, our very own pedigree, only has 3000 of its kind in the world today. without responsible breeding, this number can be easily wiped out.
Scenario 2: Responsible breeders stop breeding.. maybe to support the case of homeless strays. numbers of good quality pedigree cats, with looks representative of the breed grow lesser and lesser in number. after a short time, existing breeders are unable to attain the breeding stock they need. for instance, im a singaporean breeder and the only other breeders are in japan and malaysia. eventually, we will be breeding our cats to the other's which means, a small gene pool. genetic disorders will set in and the breed will fail to exist.

Is this phenomena seen today? To a certain extent yes. The persian, scottish fold to name a few, have been inbred and breeding lines may have been crossed more than a few times, due to the inavailability of good quality breeding cats. Genetic deformities have started to occur, bumps in the persian's skull etc.. too much inbreeding being the cause.

What societies like these aim to do is to encourage responsible breeding for breeders registered with the correct cat associations like the cfa/tica/fife etc. They also discourage owners from buying cats from pet shops where genetic background is virtually unknown. Sterilisation of cats not breeding is important to ensure their health as well as to prevent any unnecassary accidents. if my unneutered persian was to mate with a stray, i would have crossbred cats. these cats are the ones that contribute to the homeless population. more than 90% of strays are of no specific breed. As such, always ensure any cat u purchase has a pedigree cert.. so you can know its background and tell if it might have any genetic flaws. For breeders, only breed cats with pedigree certs for the same reasons. In Singapore, pedigree cats call according to season. the seasons of their country of origin(aussie nz etc).. however, a responsible breeder should not mate his female cats more than 3 times a year.. with all births spaced out.
