I got many differing views regarding this piece of 'thing' on hamsters. Read from websites that it's supposed to be scent gland on male dwarves. Also read that many male dwarves have it. Read from another forum that a girl brought her dwarf to the vet and was confirmed that it is an infection. The vet removed this piece of thing and gave the girl some antiseptic to apply on her hamster. According to what I read somewhere, it will develop if the living condition is bad. It usually develops when hamsters are still babies and the beddings are not changed frequently. I changed the beddings only 14 days after mommy hamsters gave birth. By then, the beddings were already d**n soaked with urine. I was using Carefresh then. Those male hamsters which I bought from petshops doesn't seem to have this problem. Only the male hamsters which I bred have this problem. Issit really the cause of bad living condition when they were young? And from the photo, you will notice a few blood stains on the piece of thing. I just discovered it today and is worried that it may be some kinda infection. Pls enlighten if possible.

Highheels - My first pair of hamsters. The argente had something like this also and his was bigger. They were housed together but my normal nvr showed these symptoms.. I think is more like general hygiene of the cage. And that particular hamster's personal hygiene. Cos my that argente wasn't really well kempt... But mine nvr led to having spots of blood. If it doesn't bother the hamster it should be ok i presume. My argente had oily skin so i think its not surprising he had it la. The normal was meticulously clean tho.. haiz miss them... But if your worried take it to the vet lor. Safer mah. But vets normally juz prescribe baytril and pred only.. Or can try using that blue solution to clean that area. Leoric - its like a scab cant really peel it away. Like super crusty eye or ear sh*t on your stomach..

Hahah!!! The way Animosity describes is beri funny!
And thanks Leoric for posting the pic up!
This hamster's hygiene seems rather normal to me. Not too dirty nor super clean type. Hehehe...
From what you describe, I reckon it shld be ok to leave it. I brought my hams to the vet and all the time was prescribed with antibio and vitamins... guess it's quite useless unless the vet can peel out this thing on him.
As for the blood stain, I seriously dunno how it got there. But it's just those 2 stains and no more after that. So i guess he shld be alright now.
Animosity, what blue solution?

highheels > i just found out that u can actu get a BIG bottle of the blue solution (actual name: chlorhexidine) from pharmacy. only $5. should be $3.50. u can also get from vets. small bottle for $3. i dun think there's a diff (in terms of concentration,...) though. but i think if u seldom use it, no need to get BIG bottle. dunno if pharmacy got sell small bottles of that solution. topical antibiotic powder and blue solution:

I also got a bottle of blue solution after going to the vet after Wally & Biscuits fought last yr. It's a kind of disinfection solution to wash wounds I think. I have not seen anything like this b4 leh... but u said blood stains?n he's not living with other hammies hor.. could it be he scratched himself on the belly and kenna bleeding? I found tt a corner of Wally's chest fur like stained light reddish once, so I wipe off with the blue solution. Think he scratched too much.. tt's my guess lah cos tt time he was living alone liao. But if it's infection, why all the males u breed got this patch? just in case, maybe u'll like to buy a bottle of the solution and clean tt area for a few days and see got improvement or not? u use those cotton buds for ears will be easier.
