which vet to go?

between namly animal clinic and animal clinic, animal clinic is easier to find 'cause namly is inside the landed property, near hwa chong JC, pets n stuff petshop and mr goh's residence. animal clinic is near maju camp, near sunset way.

as for the cost, animal clinic is slightly cheaper. about $50 or so for bucks. about $80 or so for does. namly animal clinic charges about $10 more than animal clinic.

as for the service, i prefer namly animal clinic. i sent all my bunnies to dr ling, and many bunny lovers send theirs to dr ling too. i read from hrss that some members find that the bunnies sent to namly recover faster than those which went to animal clinic. i think namly would be a safer bet. dr ling is more rabbit savvy. if want to try animal clinic, then try to get dr hsu... he's more rabbit savvy. dun know about animal clinic, for namly, please call and make appt b4 going down.

even though dr ling charges more for neutering / spaying. I still recomend her. btw, she's closed on thursdays.

what to expect, dos and donts...

u dun have to starve them, let them have their meals as usual. put some food and hay and treats in the carrier. they must eat something so that their digestive system would not shut down. this is VERY important!!!

after the surgery, they might not eat as much as they usually do. dun worry. it's normal. as long as they are nibbling and drinking, that's fine. usually u bring them to vet in the morning and can collect in the afternoon. usually by the next evening, they will eat considerably more.

u dun have to take a few days leave just to accompany them. just leave them alone to rest is enough. it's ok to bring 2 bunnies for sterilization on the same day. but they must be separated and left alone for a few days (about 2-4 days). easier to monitor their progress and development also. make sure they still pee and poo as normal.

try not to carry or disturb them too much. just need to monitor that they are eating and drinking. when they are feeling better, they'll start moving around more. what i do is to leave the fixed one in the carrier for a day or 2. i wont recommend putting both together just in case they hurt each other by accident. the fixed one might get stressed and thus might complicate the wound.

i just put cloth as their bedding. get something that's not hard or pokey esp if u r going to put the fixed doe inside.

no medications will be given after the surgery. the vet will give him/her anaethestic b4 the surgery. so when u collect him/her, he/she might still look blur blur. his/her eyes might be wet or slightly stained. just clean it with a wet cloth.

it'll take slightly longer time for doe to recover 'cause of the stitches. if u have to carry the doe, be very careful not to touch the stitches. more attention needs to be given to the doe 'cause of the stitches. she'll tend to be more grumpy 'cause of the pain.

all bunnies after surgery will look very moody, very quiet, drowsy, lifeless... even though they are eating and drinking well, their sleeping position for the next few days will be crouched up.

they should start eating the next day, if this is not happening, u may want to tempt them with their fav food n treats to get them to eat again. it is also VERY important 'cause this is to get their digestive system going again.

if u need to put the grill on top of the litter, make sure there isn't any sharp point that will hurt the bunnies. it's still more preferable to leave them in the carrier for a few days.

when they are fine and well, they'll auto hop out of the carrier when u open it. u'll definitely be able to see the diff.

also, please NOTE that fixed does can still get pregnant for that 1 month. so try to stop them from mounting each other. if not, be prepared to have another litter of babies coming.

if can, try to keep them separated for at least 2 weeks to a month to make sure there isn't any fighting, mounting,... fixed does will become more tamed after a few months...

bunnies can be sterilised at the age of 6 months, male buns can be earlier (4-5 months).

bunnies will be more tamed after fixing. can live longer. lower risk of getting cancer... less fights and domineering also.

forgot to mention... if u go to dr ling, she'll ask u to sign a form, for the use of anaesthetic... if ur bunnies are not allergic to it, the surgery should be very successful. if not, then really too bad. that's the only risk involved. overall, no problems with her skills.

my 2 locals recover within 3 days...

if u really want to fix them hor, better call early. sometimes must wait up to a month b4 u can bring them for fixing 1... must make appt b4 going down ah. she only does surgeries on certain days. and sometimes fully booked 1...

sound scary man... the part on like the bunny will be moody after that and running the risk of being allegic to the anaesthetic...

Btw, i have a doe and buck... since the doe will suffer so much i am thinking of spraying the buck... if only the buck is spray, will he still mount on her after he recovered?

moody is ok lah... if human sick, also will moody mah. if human go surgery, also moody mah. so ok 1 lah.

the only worrying thing is the anaesthetic lor. read from other forums that there's a bunny owner's bunny died 'cause allergic of the anaesthetic. died b4 the op. 1st time hear that got bunnies allergic to it. actually human also same mah. some ppl are allergic to anaesthetic 1.

if u want to NEUTER ur BUCK, ok lor... usually ppl dont SPAY their DOE 'cause of the pain their doe has to go thru.

ur buck will still mount ur doe for the 1st month. still can get pregnant. so must still separate them for that period, if possible. then after that, the buck will seldom / never mount her liao.

spaying doe is usually necessary to prevent ovarian cancer and all that stuff. but this cancer thingy also might be due to inheritance, caused by inbreeding...

maybe might not be of much problem for local rabbits or mixed breed ones. not sure... think maybe...

Having bred and raised rabbits for over 14 years, there is no, as far as I am concerned, merit for thinking that rabbits get cancer of the uterus, if not spayed. I know that female ferrets do for sure, and that is why they should be spayed, but rabbits - no. I have had and still have does in my barn that are about 6 years old and up and still producing. The oldest ones I have had have lived to a ripe age of 11-12. I once had a holland lop doe have a litter at the age of 8.

There is no doubt that 'does' become more aggressive as they mature and enter into a heat cycles, and with a buck around this can be very frustrating to the owner. It has taken a few years, but the vets in Western societies have finally realized that rabbits are not the bottom of the food chain for we breeders and actually have taken the time to learn more about them, which is great.

I have a lot of rabbit literature here and nowhere does it say that rabbits not spayed get cancer in their tummies. This is not to say they can't get it, as I recently had a doe diagnosed with cancer on her nose. Every time I bred her she grew a really ugly tumor on her nose that turned black. But her birth was not usual either, as her mother died during it. The baby was fostered and grew to be beautiful, but a nasty, nasty, mean doe, that I have decided is probably caused by a lack of oxygen during her mother's hard birthing process.

i would like to know... if i netured my buck and in future if one of the baby is a male and is not netured will the 2 bucks fight? (1 neutured and 1 is not)...given the scenio that both are living with 2 or 3 does.

u going to put one of the baby bunnies together with the parents in future ah? even though most say that siblings can live together better... but sometimes they still will fight and attack 1 lor. as for ur situation, i think they'll sure fight. if the one not fixed, i think he'll start spraying urine all over the place to mark his territory.

u know i put kpo and powder's cage next to the REW stray rabbit my dad found... he also always spray urine. that's the prob with bucks lor. always want to mark territory 1.

can try bonding them but wont be easy.

Then what if i keep 2 female and a netured buck together? will they fight a not?

now the 3 babies i also dun know they are female or male lei... i am going to take the father (mickey) to netured. I will sure keep mickey and minnie... i would like to keep the babies too... that's why i am checking on whether they can all stay together a not... i am having a space constraint...

if worse to worse i would need to sell the babies off...

usually siblings can live together better. if not, they might fight. but can try to bond them 1 lor. just need lots of time and patience to do that.

me also feel bad 'cause i suggest u to bring mickey for neutering mah... will definitely feel bad 1 lor... that time i also feel bad when i bring kpo and powder for fixing. and when u see them, u tend to think that they are blaming u, angry with u...

just need to give them lots of care and love after the op. talk to them, tell them it's for their own good and stuff like that. that's all u can do lor.

if u really cant bear to bring mickey there, still can cancel appt 1...

ai yo... now i see him ... like very "ke lian" cos next tuesday going for op liao... somemore my friend just send me an article that one bunny die within minute after injection. The doctor has a good reputation with operating bunny so it is not really the doc fault but because the bunny is allergic to injection. scary lei!
